Gateshead roofing firm fined after worker falls 16ft
The 61-year-old man suffered a fractured spine when he fell through a roof light while fixing it in 2012.
His employer, C Grant Roofing Ltd, admitted a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) breach at Gateshead Magistrates' Court.
The firm, of Coldwell Park Drive, was also ordered to pay costs of £1,600.
The court heard the man, of Wrekenton, can now walk but will never be able to work in the roofing industry again.
The HSE said a probe revealed the firm had failed to ensure that repairs to the roof were being carried out safely.
HSE principal inspector Robert Hirst said: "This was a wholly avoidable incident that resulted in serious injury to this man.
"Work at height is a high risk activity and falls from height remain the single biggest cause of death and serious injury in the construction industry."
